Throw Blanket Heveya® Cotton Ombre Throw
Gently textured appeal and tactility; handspun, light and plant-dyed fabric that adds a touch of class to your room - all while ensuring optimal breathability to keep you cool in the hot and sunny days of Singapore.
With the use of naturally-produced raw cotton, these handwoven throws are traditionally made by using a handloom. Compared to modern fabric making practices, a handloom is a sustainable type of weaving that requires no electricity and produces no pollution.
Using age-old techniques passed on from one generation to another, each throw is made special with utmost care and perfection by a small group of incredibly talented indigenous artisans from a local village in Indonesia. With a circular production system, they grow their own sustainable fabric, use their own local plants to dye the fabric and finish the process by handweaving - making sure to leave zero material waste behind!
After the handweaving process, these beautiful throws are naturally dyed in vibrant hues - derived from various plant sources such as leaves, flowers, roots and barks! The natural dyes used in the production are biodegradable, non-toxic and hypoallergenic, containing no harmful chemicals or carcinogens, in contrast to artificial and synthetic dyes.
Natural dyeing is an incredibly sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes as it creates zero waste; the dyeing residues left from the process are often treated and released back into the composting facilities for reusing, which eliminates water waste! After dyeing, the throws are dried naturally in the sunlight without the use of hot chambers, consuming 0 electricity!
Did you know? Most synthetic dying techniques negatively contribute to the never-ending climate crisis. They are responsible for 20% of the world’s water pollution; they increase chemical-polluted water waste which is then dumped into our oceans, ultimately destroying our ecosystems.
The people residing in rural and remote communities are vulnerable to extreme poverty as they have very limited access to infrastructure, education and employment opportunities. However, weaving is a skill known to numerous ethnic groups in Indonesia which helps open the door to basic income.
This makes handweaving a vital source of income in the lives of our local communities. The production of handspun cotton alone brings job opportunities to thousands of artisans, allowing them to keep this form of art alive for generations to come, without having to move away from the village to look for work in hopes of economic stability.
Nevertheless, as synthetic fabrics and dyes become more readily available in the textile industry at a much cheaper rate, the demand for natural fibers has decreased, affecting their income. Making the conscious decision to go local and natural allows our business to support the livelihood of our artisans - all while bringing you a product that is meaningfully produced with the best quality materials!
